Human's loose to IBM's Watson supercomputer in Jeopardy

So, in February IBM's Watson will be in an official Jeopardy tournament-style competition with titans of trivia Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. That competition will be taped starting tomorrow, but hopefully we'll get to know if a computer really can take down the greatest Jeopardy players of all time in "real time" as the show airs. It will be a historic event on par with Deep Blue vs. Garry Kasparov, and we'll absolutely be glued to our seats. Today IBM and Jeopardy offered a quick teaser of that match, with the three contestants knocking out three categories at lightning speed. Not a single question was answered wrongly, and at the end of the match Watson, who answers questions with a cold computer voice, telegraphing his certainty with simple color changes on his "avatar," was ahead with $4,400, Ken had $3,400, and Brad had $1,200.

Alright, a "win" for silicon for now, but without any Double Jeopardy or Final Jeopardy it's hard to tell how well Watson will do in a real match. What's clear is that he isn't dumb, and it seems like the best chance the humans will have will be buzzing in before Watson can run through his roughly three second decision process and activate his buzzer mechanically. An extra plus for the audience is a graphic that shows the three answers Watson has rated as most likely to be correct, and how certain he is of the answer he selects -- we don't know if that will make it into the actual TV version, but we certainly hope so. It's always nice to know the thought processes of your destroyer. Stand by for video of the match, along with an interview with David Gondek, an engineer on the project.

3D Vaio by Sony

Sony announced today that it will be launching at least one laptop next year (probably a mini-series of 'em) with a 3D-capable 240Hz LCD. The laptop will be using a built-in IR blaster to sync with your regular Bravia shutter glasses, but it's unclear whether the price of a laptop will get you a free pair of the precious specs. The prototype we got to look at here has a 16-inch 16:9 display, housed in a current F series chassis, but all that is of course subject to change when the final model lands. We do have to say, in comparison to some of the other 3D laptops we've seen, Sony's tech comes off looking pretty good, but there's nothing here to convince us this is anything beyond a niche luxury for now -- although an ability to use this screen as a 3D display for our PS3 might help us change our mind (we asked, the answer is no). Expect to hear more about this mysterious beast at next year's CES.

In order to be synchronizing with BRAVIA glasses 3D laptop computer by Sony will boast of IR blaster. Lodged in F series chassis, the laptop contains display of 16”, so it can also be used for PS3. For games and videos this laptop comes up with 1080p 240fps display. You can upgrade it from 2D to 3D with Blu-ray drives. In order to retain crystal clear picture quality 3D VAIO uses the same technology in BRAVIA TV, with Black Frame Insertion. 3D VAIO used sequential technology for HD display while utilizing shutter glass. With just one touch button you can change between 2D to 3D. So, 3D VAIO would be a 0utstanding electronic gadget of 2011.

Samsung 9 Series Notebook is Super Thin!

Weighing in at 2.89lbs, the Samsung 9 Series barely bested the Macbook Air 13.3 at 2.9lbs. And the specs are pretty impressive too.

Local reps of Samsung have actually told us about this upcoming unit back in December, claiming it will be thinner the the Mac Air so I’m not that very surprised to see this announcement.

Samsung 9 Series
13.3″ display at 1366×768
Intel Core i5 Processor 2537M @ 1.40 GHz (Turbo Boost up to 2.3 GHz)
Intel HD GT2 Integrated Graphics
4GB DDR3 RAM
128GB Solid State Drive (SSD)
Windows 7 Home Premium/Professional (64 bit)
WiFi 802.11b/g/n
WiMax
USB 3.0
Bluetooth 3.0
3 watt (1.5watt x 2) stereo speakers & 1.5watt sub-woofer
Lithium Polymer, up to 6.5 hours

The body is also made up aluminum too and comes with some curvy designs. Looks pretty interesting though I’m really hoping the 9 Series also comes in an 11.6″ display.

Coming out next month for a suggested retail price of $1,599, the Samsung 9 Series. At little steep but the high-end 13.3″ Macbook Air is also the at the same price
