Parkour on a Roller Coaster Track

Parkour (sometimes abbreviated to PK), is commonly confused with l'art du déplacement (English: the art of displacement) or sometimes freerunning. Parkour is a utilitarian discipline based upon the successful, swift and energy-efficient traversing of one's surrounding environment via the practical application of self-taught techniques, based around the concept of self-preservation and the ability to help others.[1] It is a non-competitive, physical discipline of French origin in which participants run along a route, attempting to negotiate obstacles in the most efficient way possible, using only their bodies. Skills such as jumping, climbing, vaulting, rolling and swinging are employed. Parkour can be practiced anywhere, but areas dense with obstacles are preferable, and it is most commonly practiced in urban areas. The usage and employment of flips into the named route does not constitute parkour.

The term freerunning is sometimes incorrectly used interchangeably with l'art du déplacement. While l'art du déplacement aims to enable the practitioner to be able to move quickly and creatively past obstacles, freerunning is a competition sport, with Urban FreeFlow being credited with this change of definition. Freerunning includes the use of tricking moves such as aerial rotations and spins, while the definition of parkour founder David Belle does not consider these part of parkour because the moves are merely for show, not efficient, can't help to assist anyone and do not help the participant to get from place to place. Although Sébastien Foucan is considered a co-founder of parkour, his philosophy later turned out to be different to that of parkour and grew to become known as freerunning.

A practitioner of parkour is called a traceur if it's a man, or traceuse if it's a woman. The word is most likely derived from Parisian slang "tracer" which means "to hurry" or "to move quickly". In proper French "traceur" is an adjective qualifying something that leaves a trace or a trail behind it.

Sony Uses Old School Social Media Device to Promote “The Roommate”

Sony Pictures has launched an old school media campaign for the upcoming film The Roommate, featuring a fairly archaic vehicle for interactivity: A phone number.

The studio is posting an ad in various cities stating “Roommate Wanted. Must be willing to share…everything. Killer personality a plus” along with an invitation to call Rebecca at (866) 666-6001. The call leads to a recording featuring star Leighton Meester as Rebecca stating that she’s looking for the perfect roommate and “We can share everything…” and concludes with Meester yelling “I just want to be your friend” after whipping herself up into a frenzy.

Sony’s campaign for The Roommate, a thriller premiering February 4, also contains the usual social media hooks, like pages on Facebook, YouTube and MySpace, as well as a Twitter feed.

The use of a phone number leading to an in-character conversation is an old device by movie marketers that has been used sparingly. One of the most memorable recent uses was by Warner Bros. for the 2008 movie The Dark Knight, which the studio promoted with an online game that awarded winners with a cake (picked up at a local bakery) bearing a phone number that led to a recording from the villain in that movie, the Joker.

“Pac-Man” Gets a Reality TV Show

Pac-Man, one of the most popular video games of all time, is being turned into a reality TV show. Yes, this means Pac-Man could be joining the ranks of Survivor and Jersey Shore.

Namco Bandai Games, the creators and owners of Pac-Man, have teamed up with Merv Griffin Entertainment to produce the new unscripted TV show, reports Deadine.com. It will apparently be similar to Wipeout, a reality show where contestants must complete various obstacle courses (like its famous “Big Balls” challenge) or get knocked into the muddy water.

“The idea we have is to take what Pac-Man is and bring it to life, to bring what is essentially the world’s biggest game of tag to television,” said Roy Banks, Merv Griffin Entertainment’s president of television.

The show is still in the planning stages and is currently being shopped to the major networks. But if ABC (abc) was willing to pick up I Survived a Japanese Game Show, then surely some network will pick up Pac-Man. Our hope is that the show will consist of contestants in red, cyan, pink and orange suits chasing a guy in a giant yellow ball. Or perhaps the game will consist of four obstacles called Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde. The possibilities are endless.

If picked up by a network, it will be the second time Pac-Man has graced the TV screen. Hanna-Barbera Productions produced a short-lived cartoon of the same name in the 1980s. Merv Griffin’s previous company, Merv Griffin Enterprises, produced hits like Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune and Dance Fever.

What do you think of a Pac-Man reality TV show? Would you tune in for the premiere? Let us know in the comments.

iPad reading could cut into TV's time

The iPad is changing how folks read stuff online -- no surprise if you think how different a gizmo it is to a PC.

But a new study shows it's moving online reading into primetime TV hours, which is big news. Is evening reading coming back, just in a digital style?

The study comes from internal data acquired by ReadItLater, a web service that lets users bookmark web content for perusal at a different time. Though you may think this slightly colors the dataset, the way this service works gives the company unique access to time-coded data on how iPad users (and traditional computer users) read content online.

By looking at how traffic moves through their servers, normalized for global time differences, the ReadItLater team worked out how traditional PC users spread their online reading out during the day.

As you may expect, given how deeply into our everyday lives the computer has penetrated, the curve of content consumption is pretty stable -- not much happens in the wee small hours of the day, then as people wake and go to work there's more traffic, with a small peak spread out around traditional lunch hours and another around 8 p.m. after the evening meal.

When you look at iPhone and iPad user traffic, distinct from "normal" PCs, everything is suddenly very different.

iPhone users have distinct peaks in their reading habits, timed to correspond with the morning routine of breakfast, then a commute to work, the end of the work day and homeward journey, and then last thing in the evening.

This matches the iPhone's status as a handy, portable, always-on Net browser that's good for quick content consumption.

But it's with the iPad that the statistics get very odd indeed: With minor usage spikes first thing in the morning, at lunchtime and then dinner time, the main bulk of iPad text content consumption is from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m..

Fast Company: iPad 2 rumor round-up

This is prime-time TV's slot, and it seems that as well as settling back on the sofa to watch TV, people are taking their iPad with them too. The data doesn't reveal if folk are multitasking (spending some time ogling their favorite shows, some looking data up on the Web) or are ignoring the TV altogether--but the data will still be of concern to TV execs who expect uninterrupted attention from TV watchers, in order to maximize ad revenues.

Plus it's something of a return to a traditional leisure hour image: People settling down on the couch after the evening meal to read the paper or a book, possibly to listen to the radio at the same time.

Remembering a study last year that showed how much time users devote to reading magazines on an iPad, we have to wonder is the iPad causing a renaissance in reading -- just digitally, and with Web content as well as digital books content?

Fast Company: More technology coverage

If this is true, then Rupert Murdoch's Daily iPad newspaper is arriving with pinpoint timing. And the hordes of Android tablets that have just arrived should accentuate the effect.

This is thus something that PR and advertising executives need to pay careful attention to, because the attention focus of the average consumer may be switching away from the TV to their other (newer) powerful glowing screen--in their laps.

And push it he did, remarking that the evening would be "a night of partying and heavy drinking - or what Charlie Sheen calls 'breakfast.' "

Gervais also took shots at "The Tourist," "Sex and the City 2" and others in a opening monologue that elicited some moans and groans from the celebrity crowd.

The red carpet was awash with stars before the show, including an appearance by Michael Douglas who learned last week his treatments for throat cancer were successful.

"I'm feeling great," Douglas told CNN. "I just found out last week that the tumor's gone." The actor received a standing ovation when he handed out the final award of the evening.

The Golden Globes show kicked off the Hollywood awards season Sunday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with 26 trophies handed out by an array of stars, including teenage pop sensation Justin Bieber.

Golden voice' (Ted Williams) Internet star arrested in LA

LOS ANGELES - A homeless man who became a YouTube hit for his astonishing baritone radio voice was arrested in Los Angeles after an altercation with his daughter, police and reports said Tuesday.

Ted Williams, who had struggled with drugs an alcohol, became an overnight celebrity when a video clip of his voice skills filmed while he was on the side of an Ohio highway was posted on the Internet last week by the Columbus Dispatch newspaper.

He was flooded with job offers and brought to Hollywood -- where he was arrested after officers were called to a disturbance at his hotel Monday night, and taken to a local police station, according to LA Police Department (LAPD).

The LA Times newspaper quoted sources as saying there had been an altercation between the 53-year-old and his daughter. Both were released after about an hour, and no charges were pressed, said an LAPD spokeswoman.

Williams was notably offered a two-year job with the Cleveland Cavaliers NBA club, while he visited the home of the LA Lakers on Monday, and was in town for interviews with "Entertainment Tonight" and other media outlets.

Williams, who pleaded guilty to theft charges after being arrested last May, had been living in a tent when he was discovered in the online clip showcasing his deep vocal tone and polished pronunciation.

Bamboo: IT'S OFFICIAL-THE BAND- IT'S OVER

Message from Bamboo:

Hello Everybody,

We started the band 2002-2003, playing for small venues or to whoever just wanted to sit down and listento 4 old dogs that refused to growup and continued to do what we know we were born to do (it took me awhile. I confess) No one believed in us at the start. Always with a chip on our shoulder we we're able and willingly ready to prove doubters wrong.

Here we are 7 or 8 (to the few) years later. (A Lifetime in this Business.)

Things change.

As a group we've come to a point where you have to trust your gut, your heart and your head and accept that all things change. The hardest part as always is to know when to pack it up and part ways. We've learned that this journey is not only about us but includes all who came along for the trip. Family, friends and of course our front row believers who were there for the best reason of all. To simply listen. So it didn't come easy winding down to this decision.

So here we go- IT'S OFFICIAL-THE BAND- IT'S OVER

A chapter closes and a new one begins. So what happens next? I don't know. 2011 and I readily look forward to tomorrow's "I don't knows" and hiccups. So "here we go" a new page.

This is not the end. We move forward for all the right reasons. This is not a sad day. Music will forever be a part of our lives and i couldn't imagine us just simply walking away. Not possible. All i see are possibilities.

So to end in behalf of the band and Management I would like to thank everybody.

Our friends, fans, supporters and Believers. Thank You.

To the few brave producers ut there. Thank You.

Our business partners throughout the years. Thank You.

To EMI and Polyeast. Thank You.

This is not goodbye.

World's Youngest Microsoft Certified Engineer and Red Hat Certified Engineer

I was amazed by this girl from India way back years ago when she passed the Red Hat Certifications and Microsoft Certified Professional. See her story:

World's Youngest Microsoft Professional World Record set by M. Lavinashree. M. Lavinashree has won the acclaim of being the youngest Microsoft professional by passing the Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) Pro metric Examination with 842 marks out of 1000.

She says MCP exams measure the ability to perform specific, real world job functions or set of tasks. They also deal with installing, configuring and administering Windows XP.

“I broke the world record set by a 10-year-old Pakistani girl, Arfa Karim Randhawa, as the world’s youngest MCP professional, as I am only eight years old,” she says in all innocence.

When she was in Std. II, she joined a one-year multi-media course that made her well-versed in animation, Corel Draw, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Dream Weaver and Web Designing.

Since she showed interest, her father, K. Muniyasamy, sent her for MCP coaching classes. The teachers took special care and prepared her to sit for the examination.

Her cousin, Kannan, who is in the U.S., encouraged her.

Muniyasamy wants to make her the youngest Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator.

“It comes naturally to her. She is playful and we don’t compel her into anything,” he says and adds that she begins her day at 6.30 a.m. and spends about two hours learning computers.

Lavinashree is in Std. IV at VMJ Higher Secondary School, Madurai.

She entered the Limca Book of World Records when she was three years old. She also received the National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement, 2006, conferred by the Government of India, for her exceptional ability to recite all the 1330 Thirukkurals.

She wants to become a scientist like A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who is her inspiration.

Awards & Achievements

Limca Book of World Record Holder, equivalent to Guinness Book of World Records, at the tender age of 3 for her photographic memory.

National Child Award for Exceptional Achievement, 2006, for Lavinashree’s exceptional ability in the field of recitation of 1330 Thirukural, conferred by the Government of India.
